Austin Hill helped Army take the 123rd Army/Navy Game on Saturday, forcing a crucial fumble in double overtime, leading to the game-winning field goal.
After the two teams traded first-play scores, in Navy’s second possession, they faced a third and goal from Army’s three-yard-line, threatening to take the lead. However, Hill had other ideas, punching the football away from Navy running back Anton Hall to swing the game’s momentum.
Four plays later, Quinn Maretzki nailed a 39-yard field goal, winning it for the Black Knights, 20-17.
Army and Navy played old-school smashmouth football on Saturday, with most of the action coming on the ground. There were only 16 pass attempts in the game, while both teams combined for 105 rushes.
Navy’s Xavier Arline led all ball carriers, rushing 28 times for 102 yards. Meanwhile, Hall ran seven times for 99 yards, including a 77-yard touchdown.
On the Army side, Tyhier Tyler and Markel Johnson combined for 102 yards and a touchdown off 29 carries.
Saturday’s overtime thriller was the first time in 123 meetings that the annual game between Army and Navy needed extra time to decide a winner.
Army has won five of the last seven meetings, but the Midshipmen still lead the all-time series 62-54-7.
