In just two years, the coral cover has increased from 2 percent to an impressive 70 percent, and fish populations have grown by 260 percent. The reef is even visible from Google Earth, with its seabed spelling out the word ‘H-O-P-E’.
The restoration efforts employ innovative ‘reef star’ technology, which provides support for the growth of new coral fragments. So far, 900,000 coral fragments have been planted using 60,000 Reef Stars. As a result, the recovered reefs now teem with abundant fish and biomass. The return of other species in the coral reef food web, including sharks and turtles, further illustrates the success of the program.
