Commissioner Lahbib in Rome to meet with national authorities and visit Italy’s Civil Protection Department

Today, Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management and Equality Hadja Lahbib is in Rome to meet the Italian authorities. She will meet Minister of Foreign Affairs and Vice President Antonio Tajani, to update him on her recent visit to the Middle East and discuss pressing humanitarian issues. 

She will also meet Minister for Civil Protection and Maritime Policy, Nello Musumeci, Minister for Health Orazio Schillaci and Minister for the Family, Birth Rate and Equal Opportunities, Maria Eugenia Rocella.

In her meeting with Minister Musumeci, she will hand over a wildfire peer review report. The report, amongst others, identifies strengths of the national system and puts forward recommendations for the improvement of the Italian wildfire disaster risk management system. 

During her trip, the Commissioner will also visit the Italian Civil Protection Crisis management Centre. Italy is a key member of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and has developed rescEU and European Civil Protection Pool capabilities. 

Furthermore, she will meet Kamal Kishore, UN Special Representative for Disaster Risk Reduction. 

In her role as Commissioner for Equality, Commissioner Labib will also meet the father of Giulia Cecchetin, whose daughter was the victim of femicide, to discuss ending gender-based violence. 

Moreover, Commissioner Lahbib will meet with Archbishop Gallagher, Holy See’s Secretary for Relations with States and Riccardo Paternò di Montecupo, Order of Malta Grand Chancellor.
