TCU got smoked by Georgia in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, but don’t let that result take away from a phenomenal season from the Horned Frogs.
TCU finished the season 13-2 and boasted a top-10 scoring offense nationally led by head coach Sonny Dykes and offensive coordinator Garrett Riley, who won the Broyles Award this season, which is given to the top assistant coach in the nation.
Riley’s season was so impressive as a play-caller that Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tigers noticed, liked what they saw and apparently decided to bring the 33-year-old — who is USC head coach Lincoln Riley’s brother — into the fold as soon as possible.
That meant firing first-year full-time play-caller Brandon Streeter, which Swinney announced in a statement.
“As the leader of this program, I am accountable for our staff and accountable for our results, and though we took a step forward offensively in 2022, after evaluating our offense in-depth, I felt it was in the best interest of our program to seek new leadership at that position,” Swinney said, per ESPN’s David M. Hale. “These decisions are never easy, but it is my job to evaluate and assess every part of our program every year, and this was just the right time to make a change.”
Riley has been a hot name on the assistant market — and not just because of his older brother, who is considered one of the best offensive minds in football. That’s not to say that Streeter is chopped liver, though. He was the quarterbacks coach for both Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence, who each won a national championship with Clemson and went on to become first-round NFL Draft picks.
Streeter will certainly land on his feet, but it’s Riley who has the hot hand right now.
Per ESPN, Clemson’s board of trustees will meet on Friday to approve the young offensive coordinator’s new contract.
