BEIJING — China has reiterated its willingness to play a “constructive role” in resolving the war in Ukraine, following pointed remarks from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky questioning Beijing’s neutrality and suitability as a security guarantor.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated during a press briefing that China supports a political solution based on “mutual respect, comprehensive cooperation, and sustainable security,” and is prepared to contribute to peace efforts.
The comments were in response to Zelensky’s recent dismissal of China’s potential role in a future peace agreement. Zelensky argued that China “did nothing to prevent the war” and had indirectly supported Russia by “opening the drone market,” undermining its claim to neutrality.
His remarks follow reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin had proposed China as a guarantor in a possible peace deal involving the United States and European nations.
The exchange underscores ongoing diplomatic friction over China’s position in the conflict, as Western leaders continue to scrutinize Beijing’s economic and strategic ties with Moscow.
