China’s Public Security Minister, Wang Xiaohong, has pledged to enhance international collaboration on drug control, emphasizing the need to address the root causes of the global drug problem. Speaking at a meeting on Tuesday, Wang, who also serves as the head of the national narcotics control committee, called for efforts to “eradicate the soil that breeds and spreads the drug problem,” according to state media outlet Xinhua.
The announcement comes amid ongoing pressure from the United States for China to take stronger action in curbing the flow of fentanyl, a potent synthetic opioid linked to rising overdose deaths in the U.S. While China asserts that it has some of the world’s strictest drug laws, the country maintains that the U.S. should focus on reducing domestic demand for narcotics as part of a broader solution.
This statement reflects China’s stance on international drug control cooperation while highlighting the complexities of addressing global drug trafficking and abuse.
