China Imposes Heavy Tariffs on Canadian Food Products in Retaliation

Business

China has announced new tariffs of up to 100% on Canadian food exports, including canola and pork, set to take effect on March 20. The move is in direct response to Canada’s imposition of tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, steel, and aluminum.

China’s State Council Tariff Commission stated that the tariffs aim to discourage Canada, along with Mexico, from aligning with U.S. trade policies that restrict Chinese goods. The Ministry of Commerce called on Canada to lift the tariffs, framing the duties as a warning against further cooperation with the U.S. on trade matters.

As of now, the Canadian government has yet to respond to the new trade measures. This escalation in trade tensions between Canada and China marks another chapter in the ongoing global trade dispute.
