As the U.S. intensifies its trade war with China, Beijing is seeking to strengthen its economic relationship with Canada. Chinese Ambassador to Canada, Wang Di, called for increased trade between the two nations, emphasizing that the U.S. trade policies are creating global instability. Speaking at a trade-promotion event in Ottawa, Wang criticized U.S. unilateralism and protectionism, warning that these practices threaten the global economic recovery.
Wang’s comments come on a day when the U.S. blacklisted over 50 Chinese companies, targeting Beijing’s artificial intelligence (A.I.) chip sector. Despite ongoing political tensions, including U.S. tariffs on both Chinese and Canadian imports, Wang noted that trade between China and Canada continues to grow.
The remarks follow China’s recent imposition of retaliatory tariffs on Canadian canola and pork, which Wang justified as a response to Canada’s 100% tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. He suggested that the two countries could explore a free-trade agreement, especially as the U.S. leans further toward protectionism.
In 2017, Canada and China held initial discussions about a trade deal, but talks collapsed over labor and environmental issues. Nevertheless, Wang stressed that both countries should collaborate for mutual prosperity, hinting that future negotiations could pave the way for closer ties despite political hurdles.
This development highlights the shifting global trade dynamics, as countries reassess their alliances amid increasing protectionist measures from major powers.
