In the midst of escalating violence in Sudan, the most vulnerable continue to bear the brunt of the conflict. Recent reports from the United Nations and humanitarian organizations paint a grim picture, with children caught in the crossfire of relentless fighting.
On February 3, shelling in Kadugli, South Kordofan State, claimed the lives of 21 children and left 29 others severely injured. Just days before, on February 2, another wave of violence in Khartoum State saw 8 children killed and 6 more injured in similar attacks. The situation in Darfur’s El Fasher region was no less tragic, with at least 11 children losing their lives in an assault on a livestock market.
As the conflict rages on, it has become increasingly rare for even a few days to pass without fresh reports of children suffering from the violence. The death toll continues to climb, underscoring the heavy toll the war is taking on Sudan’s youngest generation.
Annmarie Swai, spokesperson for UNICEF Sudan, expressed deep concern over the mounting civilian casualties, emphasizing that “Children in Sudan are paying the ultimate price of the relentless fighting.” She called on all parties involved to honor their international obligations, particularly under international humanitarian law, to protect children from further harm and safeguard their rights.
The ongoing violence in Sudan has left children disproportionately affected, highlighting the urgent need for a comprehensive and sustained effort to protect vulnerable populations and provide them with the aid and support they desperately need.
As the international community watches the humanitarian crisis unfold, UNICEF continues to call for immediate action to uphold children’s rights in Sudan and ensure they are protected from the horrors of war.
