Canada Filed Legal Complaint against U.S. Steel Tariffs at WTO

World

March 2025 – Canada has formally filed a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the United States’ controversial steel and aluminum tariffs, which were set at 50% under the Trump administration. Despite the U.S. walking back some of these measures, Canada argues that the tariffs violate U.S. obligations under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).

The Canadian government initiated the request for WTO dispute consultations, signaling that the trade tensions between the two countries remain unresolved, even as the U.S. has softened its position on the tariffs. Canada’s decision to pursue this route reflects broader concerns about global trade fairness and adherence to international rules.

While the U.S. has justified the tariffs citing national security concerns, Canada’s government insists that the move is a unilateral action that breaches established global trade agreements.

This dispute comes as both nations navigate post-Trump trade relations, with Canada seeking to secure better terms for its steel and aluminum industries while holding the U.S. accountable for its tariff practices.
