A six-year-old British boy has reportedly been caught up in a major international drug trafficking operation, after being detained alongside six adults at Mauritius’ main airport in connection with a £1.6 million cannabis smuggling plot.
The group—comprised of six British nationals, one Romanian man, and the child—was stopped on Sunday at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU). According to local reports, customs officials discovered 161kg of cannabis concealed in suitcases, including 24 packages weighing 14kg allegedly hidden in the child’s luggage.
The boy’s 35-year-old British mother was allegedly carrying 29 packages, while her Romanian partner was reportedly found with 32 packages. Local authorities estimate the total value of the drugs at approximately £1.6 million on the Mauritian black market.
All adults were provisionally charged with drug trafficking offences following a court appearance in Mahebourg, and remain in custody. Mauritian media outlet Defi Media reports that police have formally opposed any conditional release.
It is unclear whether the child remains in custody or has been placed under protective care, though the case has raised urgent concerns over the use of minors in international drug trafficking rings.
