Apple has launched a major initiative to develop its own AI-powered “Answer Engine,” marking its most ambitious move yet in the generative AI space. The project aims to deliver direct, conversational answers to user queries—bypassing traditional web links—and could fundamentally reshape how Apple users interact with information across devices.

🧠 A Strategic Shift in AI

The new system is being developed by Apple’s recently formed Answers, Knowledge, and Information (AKI) team, led by Siri veteran Robby Walker and reporting to AI chief John Giannandrea. The goal: create a proprietary answer engine that rivals ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and traditional search engines.

Unlike previous Siri upgrades, this initiative represents a full architectural overhaul. Apple’s prior attempts to graft generative AI onto Siri’s legacy infrastructure were reportedly plagued by bugs and technical debt. The AKI team is now building a new backend system from the ground up to support natural-language queries and context-aware results.

🔍 Integration Across Apple Ecosystem

The answer engine is expected to power:

  • Siri: enabling real-time, conversational responses
  • Safari: enhancing search capabilities within the browser
  • Spotlight: offering direct answers from device or web content
  • A potential standalone app: delivering AI search natively across iOS and macOS

Apple is also hiring aggressively for roles in search algorithms and engine development, signaling a long-term commitment to in-house AI infrastructure.

🌐 A Challenge to Google’s Dominance

Apple’s reliance on Google Search—reportedly worth $20 billion annually—is under antitrust scrutiny in the U.S.. The answer engine could reduce Apple’s dependence on Google and position it as a direct competitor in the AI search space.

CEO Tim Cook has described AI as “one of the most profound technologies of our lifetime” and believes Apple can dominate the space despite its late entry.

❓ Cross-Platform Uncertainty

While the engine is designed to work seamlessly across Apple’s ecosystem, it remains unclear whether it will be available on non-Apple platforms. Apple has not commented on cross-platform support, and the project is still in early development.
