On April 25, 2025, Lieutenant General Yaroslav Moskalik, a senior officer in the Russian military, was killed in a car bomb explosion in Balashikha, a suburb east of Moscow. According to Russia’s Investigative Committee, the device was an improvised explosive device (IED) rigged with shrapnel and remotely detonated as Moskalik approached his vehicle. The blast was powerful enough to shatter windows in nearby buildings .
The explosion occurred in a residential area, with video footage showing a vehicle engulfed in flames in a courtyard. Emergency responders found remnants of the device, which was estimated to have a force equivalent to more than 300 grams of TNT . At least two others were injured in the attack.
Moskalik, who previously represented Russia in 2015 peace talks with Ukraine, was serving as the deputy head of the Main Operations Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces. His death marks the latest in a series of high-profile assassinations targeting Russian military officials since the onset of the Russo-Ukrainian War .
The Investigative Committee has classified the incident as a murder and is conducting an ongoing investigation. Authorities have not identified any suspects at this time.
This attack coincides with heightened tensions in the region, including recent Russian missile strikes on Ukraine and diplomatic efforts involving U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff’s visit to Moscow to discuss peace proposals .
