Human Rights

Geneva, 19 May 2025 – The Press Emblem Campaign (PEC), a global media watchdog advocating for journalist safety and press freedom, has expressed deep concern and outrage over the killing of Indian journalist Dharmendra Singh Chauhan. The Haryana-based journalist, associated with the online news platform Fast News India, was shot by unidentified assailants on 18 May and later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital in Gurugram.

Chauhan, a resident of Luhari village in Jhajjar district, was reportedly attacked while taking a walk after dinner.

“We strongly condemn the brutal murder of Dharmendra Singh Chauhan, who is the 64th journalist to be killed globally in 2025,” said PEC President Blaise Lempen. “We call for a transparent and thorough investigation to bring those responsible to justice. We also urge the Chief Minister of Haryana, Nayab Singh Saini, to take personal interest in the case and ensure adequate compensation for Chauhan’s family.”

Nava Thakuria, PEC’s representative for South and Southeast Asia, added that Chauhan’s death marks the fourth journalist killing in India this year. The previous victims were Mukesh Chandrakar, Raghavendra Vajpayee, and Sahadev Dey.

PEC continues to advocate for stronger protections for journalists and press freedom across the globe.
