Amnesty International has called for justice for the victims of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, urging accountability for war crimes and reparations for the affected. In a statement issued Monday, Secretary General Agnès Callamard emphasized that any peace negotiations must prioritize justice for crimes committed since Russia’s military intervention in 2014.

Callamard also addressed U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to secure lasting peace by ensuring accountability for those responsible for war crimes, warning that a rushed peace deal would prolong the suffering of victims and allow impunity for perpetrators.

Since the conflict’s escalation, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) reports over 12,600 civilian deaths in Ukraine. Allegations against Russia include forced disappearances, the imposition of Russia’s educational system, and war crimes such as torture and extrajudicial killings.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued arrest warrants for President Vladimir Putin and other Russian officials, citing evidence of their involvement in or failure to prevent these atrocities.

Amnesty International’s statement underscores the importance of ensuring justice and accountability as crucial elements in any resolution to the conflict.
