📍 Washington, D.C. — A strategic alliance between Amazon Web Services, X-energy, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), and Doosan Enerbility has been announced to deploy advanced nuclear technology in the United States, targeting over 5 gigawatts of new capacity by 2039. The initiative is designed to meet surging energy demands from artificial intelligence infrastructure, data centers, and industrial electrification.

The partnership will mobilize up to $50 billion in public and private investment to scale X-energy’s Xe-100 small modular reactors (SMRs) and associated supply chains. The Xe-100, a high-temperature, gas-cooled reactor, is engineered for modular deployment and enhanced safety, using TRISO-X fuel.

Aligned with the $350 billion U.S.–South Korea trade pact, the collaboration strengthens bilateral ties in advanced nuclear development and positions both nations to lead in the global SMR market. KHNP and Doosan will contribute engineering and manufacturing expertise, while Amazon aims to integrate nuclear energy into its data center operations.

“This partnership brings together proven nuclear leadership and advanced reactor technology to meet a historic energy challenge,” said X-energy CEO J. Clay Sell. KHNP CEO Dr. Joo-ho Whang emphasized the global stakes, citing intensifying competition in SMR deployment.

The agreement builds on existing projects, including X-energy’s regulatory-reviewed deployment with Dow Inc. in Texas and a planned multi-reactor site in Washington State with Energy Northwest and Amazon.
