Between 2015 and 2024, the Business & Human Rights Resource Centre documented over 6,400 cases of human rights defenders facing attacks for speaking out against business-related harms—an average of nearly two incidents per day over the past decade.
The findings, published in the Centre’s latest review titled Defending Rights for a Just Economy, highlight a disturbing global pattern of retaliation against individuals and communities who raise concerns about environmental, social, and human rights impacts of corporate activity.
The report identifies the mining, agribusiness, and fossil fuel sectors as the most frequently linked to such attacks. Indigenous peoples were disproportionately affected, with many targeted for defending ancestral lands and natural resources from commercial exploitation.
The Centre’s analysis underscores the urgent need for stronger protections and accountability mechanisms to ensure that businesses respect human rights and that those who defend them can do so safely and without fear of reprisals.
