Toronto Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner has seen his franchise-record point streak come to an end at 23 games after being held off the score sheet on Thursday night against the New York Rangers.
The Leafs were held to just one goal as the Rangers beat the Leafs 3-1. Unsurprisingly, Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin played the biggest role in that, stopping 22 of 23 shots, including three from Marner. Michael Bunting scored the lone goal for the Leafs, with David Kampf and Conor Timmins getting the assists on the goal.
Marner had set the franchise record less than two weeks ago against the Tampa Bay Lightning, so the past four games have been gravy for the winger in terms of keeping that record as his own. He had 11 goals, 21 assists and 32 points during the 23-game streak, including stretches with a five-game goal streak and an 11-game assist streak.
The record was previously held by Darryl Sittler and Eddie Olczyk, who had 18-game point streaks in their respective streaks in the 1978-79 and 1989-90 seasons.
With the streak taking up most of Marner’s season, his full-season totals aren’t that different from his totals during the streak, with 12 goals, 25 assists and 37 points in 31 games on the year. Thursday’s game was just the third all season that he was held off the scoresheet.
The regulation loss also meant another point streak came to an end on Thursday, as the Leafs had points in their previous 15 games, going 12-0-3 during that stretch. They would have tied the franchise record of 16 games if they had won against the Rangers.
One player did see his point streak continue, as Bunting’s goal gives him points in his last 10 games. He has three goals, nine assists and 12 points during his streak.
