The 2022-23 NBA season did not go as planned for Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks.
It all started last offseason when Jalen Brunson bolted Big D for the Big Apple, leaving Luka without a true running mate. Realizing their mistake too late, the front office made the risky move of trading for Kyrie Irving, who was not exactly having a banner year himself in 2023. The move did not pay off, with Dallas only managing to go 8-12 with him in the lineup. The team still had a chance to make the play-in tournament but sat Kyrie and a number of other players, leading the NBA to announce that they are planning to investigate the matter. Despite all this, owner Mark Cuban would like to run it all back with Kyrie and Luka next season, but if the team can’t find other complementary players to place around them, come this time next year, things may not look much different in Dallas.
