Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon appears set to return to the club next season, regardless of what happens in two weeks at Super Bowl LVII.
Following the Eagles’ dominant 31-7 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday, Gannon defiantly rejected the idea that he’d be heading elsewhere next season. Gannon told FOX29’s Breeland Moore, “I’m staying here.”
When questioned about Sunday night’s NFC title game being his final home game with the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field, Gannon responded, “No, no, Philly’s keeping me, good, bad or indifferent.”
Gannon may not be appreciated fully among the notoriously tough Philadelphia fanbase, but the talented coordinator is well thought of throughout NFL circles. And due to Gannon’s success with the Eagles’ defense, his name has come up as a possible candidate for open head coach positions.
The 39-year-old has already interviewed with the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans for their vacant roles and would be eligible for a second round of interviews beginning Monday. However, after his comments on Sunday night, that point appears moot.
Gannon received interest regarding head coaching positions last offseason as well. Before returning to the Eagles, Gannon interviewed with the Texans twice and also met with the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos.
Under Gannon, the Eagles’ defense finished the season second in the NFL in yards against per game (301.5), giving up only 20.2 points per game, tied for fifth in the league, per ESPN stats.
