Lockerbie bombing: Here’s what happened in the deadly 1988 attack

A Libyan man accused of building a bomb for a 1988 terrorist attack that killed 270 people in an American plane over Lockerbie, Scotland, is in U.S. custody, officials said Sunday, a new development in a decades-long effort by the Justice Department and Scottish authorities to prosecute those responsible.

The bombing was the deadliest terrorist attack in the history of the United Kingdom, and second only to Sept. 11, 2001, for Americans.

The attack shocked the world and prompted an investigation that stretched over decades, with authorities pursuing leads in 50 countries and interviewing thousands of people, leading to the Sunday detention of Abu Agela Mas’ud Kheir al-Marimi.
