Add a new-but-familiar name to the Broncos’ search for a head coach: David Shaw.
The former Stanford coach, who left his alma mater in November, interviewed with the Broncos this week, per ESPN. Denver is one of several NFL teams searching for a new head coach.
Shaw compiled a 96-54 record at Stanford but missed bowls the past four seasons. His biggest success came from 2012-2015 when he went to the Rose Bowl three out of four years.
While Shaw spent 12 years as head coach at Stanford, he has extensive ties to the NFL. He served on the staff of the Raiders from 1998-2001 and Ravens from 2002-2005, working mostly with wide receivers.
The 50-year-old was once a highly sought coach for NFL positions, but Shaw never made the jump. His appeal appeared to shrink in the past few years as Stanford struggled.
Shaw was hardly mentioned as a candidate for many college football head-coaching jobs that came open in the last cycle. So it appears he is being picky about his next team.
He is the second coach with extensive college football ties to interview with the Broncos. Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh was interviewed earlier this week, per the Detroit News. Like Shaw, Harbaugh has extensive experience with the NFL.
The Broncos are searching for a head coach after firing Nathaniel Hackett 15 games into his tenure. He had a 4-11 record.
Other names rumored to be in the mix include former Saints coach Sean Payton, Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.
