Monster Spotting Around the World – Are you up for a brand new challenge? Would you like to live on in the history books forever? If you’ve ever fantasised about being the one who finally finds Bigfoot, or meets the Abominable Snowman, then we’ve got some vital information for you.
Silver Fern Holidays have produced these funky cards that give you all the basic information you need to find some of the world’s fabled monsters. They’ve given you their whereabouts, clues to look out for, the equipment you need and more. You may want to pick up some other skills before attempting to find any of these monsters, but the best place to start is with these cards.
We’ll kick things off with perhaps the most famous monster known to man: Bigfoot. Also known as the Sasquatch, there have been several possible sightings of it in the Pacific Northwest of the USA. Now, there have been sightings all over the country, so maybe there’s a whole species of Bigfoots. Or, is it just the one?
The hunt for Bigfoot is the most well-documented. There have been over 3,000 sightings of Bigfoot in the last 92 years. That’s a sighting every ten days. It’s a difficult one to suss out. A sighting every 10 days for the last 92 years gives you reason to believe that there’s something fishy out there. However, none of the sightings are convincing enough.
The Loch Ness Monster
In the misty lakes of Scotland, there is a decades-long mystery that has yet to be solved. The Loch Ness Monster of, you guessed it, Loch Ness in Scotland is believed to be lurking in the waters, and with this card you’ll know exactly what you need to put the hunt to bed.
Break out your binoculars, invest in an underwater camera and bring a hot flask of soup, it’s time to hunt for Nessie. Keep an eye out for disturbed water or Nessie’s fabled humps breaking the surface of the lake. Is she some kind of water camel? Is she a dinosaur? Is she some kind of hybrid between the two? That’s for you to find out.
Chupacabra
A name that strikes fear into the hearts of the people of Central America, the Chupacabra has been haunting those lands for its livestock. Whilst other monsters have been around for a while or their mystery has been unsolved for decades, if not centuries, the Chupacabra is a relatively new kid on the block.
It was first sighted in 1995 in Puerto Rico. Eight sheep were found dead in the country, with no sign of foul play except three puncture wounds. The blood had been drained out of the sheep and this earned the monster the name of Chupacabra. When translated literally, this means ‘Goat Sucker’.
Since the first sighting in 1995, the floodgates have opened. As you can see from our card, there have now been multiple sightings of the beast. This only adds to the mystery in our eyes. Where were they all hiding before this? What do you think? Has a new species of livestock killers come to being? Or is it all a trick of the mind?
Bunyip
Here’s one we won’t blame you for not knowing about. A Bunyip is an evil water spirit that can be found in the billabongs, swamps and murky waters of Australia. It has only been seen in the south-east of the country and at seven metres long, you may want to be careful what you wish for if you want to find one of these.
Bunyips have been known to be hostile towards humans and we don’t have the best idea of what they look like. The people who have encountered Bunyips have been so terrified of them that no one has stopped to take a good look of them. You could be that first someone!
Fly into Sydney Airport and bring some insect repellent, an air horn, night vision goggles and a GPS. Keep your eyes peeled for discarded bones, flipper prints and unusual animal calls.
Patupaiarehe
Don’t be fooled by the disarming and innocent appearance of our next mythical creature. These are the Patupaiarehe. There are pale spirit beings that dwell in the forests and mountaintops of New Zealand. They lure you over to them with their hypnotic pipe music. From there, there’s no telling what will happen to you.
The Patupaiarehe are said to be beings from another world and have had many interactions with humans. Sometimes, they impart their other-worldly knowledge onto humans. Other times, they have been known to be hostile. They have sheet-white skin and burning blue eyes.
If you happen to be walking in the New Zealand forest, and you hear some enticing pipe music, get your camera ready and keep your wits about you. You may be taken on a journey to another world. You may be viciously attacked. The thrill is in not knowing.
Yeti
The Abominable Snowman has been rumoured to roam the Himalayan Mountains and has been for centuries. The Yeti is like Snow Bigfoot and is equally feared as its forest dwelling cousin. Again, it is not known whether there is one Abominable Snowman or a whole herd. If Monsters Inc is anything to go by, it’s one mistaken, lonely creature.
You’re going to want to wrap up warm if you’re going to go looking for a Yeti, the Himalayan Mountains are no walk in the park. You may also want to enlist the help of a Sherpa for your quest. The locals are the only ones with a working knowledge of this beast, and you’ll want a noble Sherpa by your side if the proverbial hits the fan.
