In a 27-13 victory over Tennessee on Thursday, Cowboys QB Dak Prescott threw two interceptions, tying Derek Carr for the league lead with 14. Prescott’s interception total, however, is misleading.
Coming into the game, Prescott was tied for the most interceptions (six) that weren’t deemed turnover-worthy (not his fault), per Pro Football Focus’ John Owning.
PFF pointed out Prescott’s first interception against Tennessee as an example. The pass was on target, but rookie tight end Peyton Hendershot bobbled the pass, which was intercepted by safety Kevin Byard.
If he had fewer unlucky bounces, Prescott’s interception total would be significantly lower.
Prescott can’t avoid all blame for interceptions, of course. But critics should keep in mind that in 11 starts, he’s completing 69.2 percent of his passing attempts—a career-high and second best in the league.
After the game, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy didn’t criticize Prescott for the interceptions.
“The answer is not to over-coach it or over-emphasize it. The goal is to be explosive on offense, and the stats speak for themselves,” McCarthy said in a post-game news conference.
With Prescott at QB, Dallas (12-4) has scored 25 points or more over its past nine games, a franchise record.
Teams that win championships take risks, like the Rams last season—Matthew Stafford tied for the league lead in interceptions. Dallas shouldn’t get conservative on offense.
Despite the picks, Prescott doesn’t deserve to be a scapegoat.
