From Morning Coffee to Heavy Mobility: A Sprawling Global Reach

Few corporate entities impact daily human activity as ubiquitously as Tata. The group’s portfolio spans ten vertical sectors, ranging from basic household staples to advanced defense systems and deep technology:

  • Consumer & Retail: The group controls Tata Consumer Products, producing everything from Tata Salt to Tetley Tea and Eight O’Clock Coffee, while operating Starbucks across India. Its retail footprint extends to luxury jewelry via Titan (Tanishq), apparel chains like Trent (Westside, Zudio), and e-commerce platforms like BigBasket.
  • Automotive & Defense:Tata Motors dominates South Asian commercial transit while owning Britain’s luxury automaker Jaguar Land Rover (JLR). Tata Advanced Systems manufactures aerospace components, radar systems, and armored military vehicles.
  • Aviation & Hospitality: Following its 2022 acquisition of flagship carrier Air India and subsequent consolidation of Vistara and Air India Express, Tata operates India’s premier international airline fleet. Through the Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), it owns and manages iconic luxury properties under the landmark Taj Hotels brand.

A Decisive Epoch for Succession Planning

During his tenure since 2017, Chandrasekaran orchestrated major structural changes, expanding the group into battery cell manufacturing, semiconductor assembly, and e-commerce through Tata Digital, while doubling aggregate revenues.

His decision to initiate succession planning early gives majority shareholder Tata Trusts—which holds a controlling 66% stake in Tata Sons—and the board ample time to identify leadership capable of managing one of the world’s most complex and deeply diversified corporate structures.
