In a move that signals the dawn of “Physical AI,” NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang officially launched the Alpamayo AI platform at CES 2026 on January 5, 2026. Designed to bring “deep-reasoning” capabilities to autonomous vehicles (AVs), Alpamayo shifts the industry from reactive, rule-based systems to intelligent agents that can think, justify, and act in real-world environments.

Huang described the release as the “ChatGPT moment for physical AI,” providing the foundation for machines to navigate the “long tail” of driving—those rare and unpredictable scenarios that have historically stalled the dream of full Level 4 autonomy.

Rather than a single software update, Alpamayo is an open ecosystem composed of three foundational components designed to accelerate global AV research.

Launching in the U.S. in Q1 2026, the vehicle features MB.Drive Assist Pro, a Level 2+ system that handles point-to-point urban navigation.

NVIDIA’s “open-source” strategy for Alpamayo marks a sharp contrast to the proprietary approach of rivals like Tesla. By hosting the models on Hugging Face, NVIDIA is positioning itself as the “operating system” for the global autonomous industry, with partners like Jaguar Land Rover, Lucid, and Uber already tapping into the ecosystem.
