Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD has welcomed An Coimisiún Pleanála’s decision to grant planning permission for almost 1,000 new social and affordable purchase homes in Dundrum, describing the move as a significant milestone for large‑scale, State‑led housing delivery on public land.
The project will see 934 new homes—a mix of apartments, duplexes and houses—developed on the site of the former Central Mental Hospital. The scheme is being advanced by the Land Development Agency (LDA) as part of its mandate to deliver affordable, high‑quality housing on well‑located State‑owned sites.
Minister Browne said the approval marks a major step forward for a long‑anticipated development in an area of high housing demand. He highlighted the LDA’s track record, referencing major projects such as the Shanganagh development in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, and stressed the need for continued momentum and scale in public‑led housing delivery.
Under the Government’s Housing Action Plan, Delivering Homes, Building Communities, €2.5 billion in new equity capital has been committed to expanding the LDA’s role and accelerating the supply of affordable and social homes nationwide. Browne said he looks forward to working with the LDA and Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council as the Dundrum project progresses.
“These homes are essential in responding to our housing crisis,” the Minister said, adding that the Government remains focused on advancing ambitious, large‑scale developments on strategically located public land.
