Adults across Ireland who unwrapped new smartphones, tablets or laptops this Christmas are being encouraged to boost their confidence and essential skills in the year ahead. Ministers James Lawless TD and Marian Harkin TD have called on people to take advantage of nationwide learning supports designed to strengthen digital, literacy, numeracy and financial skills.
The appeal comes as part of the Government’s Adult Literacy for Life (ALL) strategy, which offers accessible, community‑based courses for adults who may have left school early or simply want to refresh their abilities. The initiative aims to help learners navigate everyday tasks—from reading documents and sending emails to budgeting online and using apps—while opening pathways into further education, training and employment.
Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science James Lawless said the New Year presents an ideal moment for adults to reconnect with learning, noting that new devices should “open doors, not create barriers.” He emphasised that supports are available in every community to help people build confidence in a fast‑moving digital world.
Minister of State Marian Harkin highlighted the growing importance of digital skills in work, family and community life. She encouraged adults who feel unsure about using new technology to seek guidance from their local Education and Training Board, stressing that learning is accessible, stigma‑free and tailored to individual pace.
Yvonne McKenna, Director of the Adult Literacy for Life Programme Office at SOLAS, said improved essential skills strengthen both individuals and communities. She noted that the Collaboration and Innovation Fund, now open for applications, is helping organisations develop creative projects that support adults in building practical skills for everyday life and work.
Adults seeking support with digital literacy, reading, writing or numeracy can contact their local Education and Training Board or visit adultliteracyforlife.ie/free-courses for more information.
