The Minister for Children, Disability and Equality, Norma Foley, has confirmed that nearly 40,000 young children across Ireland have taken part in the 2025 My Little Library Initiative, a nationwide programme designed to foster early literacy and strengthen links between families and local libraries.
Expanding Access to Literacy
Each year, around 50,000 children leaving pre‑school and entering primary school are invited to collect a free book bag from their local library. The initiative, funded by the Department of Children, Disability and Equality, provides resources in both English and Irish, supporting children and parents during the transition to primary education.
This year, almost 20,000 children joined their local library for the first time through the scheme, highlighting its role in expanding access to reading and community engagement.
Minister’s Remarks
Minister Foley praised the high level of participation, stating:
“The gift of reading to and with children cannot be overestimated. It supports connection between parents and children while promoting early language and literacy development, which is crucial for success in education.”
She encouraged families who have not yet collected their book bag to do so, noting that supplies remain available in libraries nationwide.
Resources and Support
Each book bag includes:
- Age‑appropriate books in English and Irish, with glossaries for Irish texts.
- Guidance materials such as First 5 resources for parents, a library social story card, and supports from Dyslexia Ireland and Vision Ireland.
Ireland’s 330 public libraries, managed by local authorities, play a central role in delivering the initiative and building stronger community ties.
Strategic Context
The Little Library Initiative forms part of Ireland’s Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Literacy Strategy 2024–2033, the National Public Library Strategy 2023–2027, and the First 5 Whole‑of‑Government Strategy for Babies, Young Children and their Families. Together, these frameworks aim to enhance early childhood development and ensure equitable access to literacy resources nationwide.
