Human Rights

Ireland formally launched its campaign for a seat on the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) for the 2027–2029 term on Thursday, November 20, 2025, at UN Headquarters in New York. The event was accompanied by “Drawing Hope: Children’s Art for Peace”, an exhibition showcasing artwork from children in eight countries, including Ireland, symbolizing the campaign’s focus on inclusivity and global solidarity.

Ireland’s Human Rights Priorities

The campaign builds on priorities unveiled during the UN General Assembly High-Level Week in September, which emphasize:

  • Protection of civil society space and support for human rights defenders
  • Advancement of women’s rights and gender equality
  • Promotion of the rights of LGBTIQ+ persons
  • Safeguarding the right to food
  • Defending the rights of persons with disabilities in conflict situations

Minister’s Statement

Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Helen McEntee TD underscored Ireland’s commitment to human rights, stating:

“Ireland is, and will continue to be, a consistent voice and committed partner for human rights. We must continue to strive to reach and support those furthest behind first, including the most vulnerable in times of conflict and crisis.”

She added that Ireland will remain a strong supporter of the multilateral system, highlighting the UN’s three pillars of peace and security, sustainable development, and human rights.

Election Timeline and Outlook

The election for the Human Rights Council will take place in October 2026, with successful candidates beginning their three-year term in January 2027. Ireland’s campaign positions the country as a vigorous advocate for global human rights, aiming to strengthen international cooperation at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and humanitarian challenges.
