The EU is co-chairing today a ministerial roundtable on humanitarian crises in the Sahel and Lake Chad regions. The EU will reaffirm its commitment to combining emergency response with investments in resilience, sustainable development and social cohesion.
In 2025, the EU has mobilised over €541.6 million in humanitarian, development and peace assistance to respond to the overwhelming needs affecting displaced population, their hosting communities and population directly impacted by insecurity in the Sahel and Lake Chad countries.
The event, held in Brussels, will be co-hosted by Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, and African Union Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, Amma Twum-Amoah.
Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, said:
‘In the Sahel and Lake Chad regions people face insecurity, conflict, recurrent violence and climate shocks that force families out of their homes and raise urgent humanitarian needs. Shifting funding patterns risk leaving these communities unsupported, while violations of International Humanitarian Law, persistent insecurity and a shrinking humanitarian space hinder aid and development efforts. We must bring these crises into full view.’
