Dublin, 9 October 2025 — Ireland’s Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris TD has welcomed the announcement by President Donald Trump that Israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a ceasefire and peace deal for Gaza, describing it as a pivotal moment in efforts to end the war and humanitarian crisis.

A Call for Urgent Implementation

In a statement issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Tánaiste said the agreement presents a “critical moment that can see an end to the war,” and urged all parties to act swiftly to implement its terms. These include:

  • The release of Israeli hostages
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces to agreed lines
  • The entry of vital humanitarian aid into Gaza

Humanitarian Imperative

“This historic moment, if grasped by all, can finally end the unconscionable human suffering,” the Tánaiste said. “It can stop the dreadful bombing, silence the guns, end the famine and genocide, and allow a surge of humanitarian aid into Gaza.”

He emphasized the need for a permanent ceasefire and a renewed commitment to a two-state solution, acknowledging the challenges ahead but stressing that the opportunity for lasting peace must not be missed.

Ireland’s Position

The Tánaiste expressed solidarity with the people of Gaza and the families of hostages, stating: “My thoughts today are with those who have suffered so much over the past two horrific years.” He reaffirmed Ireland’s readiness to support peace efforts and humanitarian relief “in every practical way.”

Outlook

The ceasefire agreement marks the most significant diplomatic breakthrough since the conflict began in October 2023. As international actors prepare to support its implementation, Ireland has positioned itself as a committed partner in the pursuit of peace and the alleviation of suffering in the region.
