Richard Guiney, CEO of Dublin Town—a representative body for city centre businesses—has proposed the introduction of curfews or exclusion zones in Dublin following a series of violent incidents that have raised public safety concerns.
The suggestion comes after two stabbings occurred over the weekend. On Sunday evening, a teenage boy was hospitalised after being stabbed multiple times on Eden Quay. Just a day earlier, an English tourist was also stabbed in the city centre, prompting renewed scrutiny of antisocial behaviour in the capital.
Guiney stated that Ireland should consider curfews or restricted access areas as part of a broader strategy to address escalating violence and protect residents, visitors, and businesses. “We need to look at all options to ensure Dublin remains a safe and welcoming city,” he said.
While the proposal has sparked debate, it reflects growing anxiety among city stakeholders over deteriorating public order. Authorities have yet to formally respond to the recommendation, but discussions around urban safety and policing are expected to intensify in the coming weeks.
