The Irish Government has unveiled over €4.6 million in funding to support Irish diaspora organisations across the United States and Canada, reinforcing its commitment to overseas communities through the Emigrant Support Programme (ESP).

Announced by Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Simon Harris TD, alongside Minister of State for International Development and Diaspora Neale Richmond TD, the funding will benefit 186 organisations—145 in the U.S. and 41 in Canada. The grants aim to strengthen cultural, social, and economic ties while delivering essential services to vulnerable emigrants.

Speaking at Ireland House in New York, Minister Harris highlighted the programme’s role in deepening heritage connections and supporting first-time applicants in states such as Louisiana, Delaware, Maryland, and Nevada. He credited the expansion of Ireland’s diplomatic network under the Global Ireland strategy for enabling broader outreach.

Minister Richmond emphasized the economic dimension of the diaspora strategy, noting the value of Irish business networks abroad in advancing trade and investment priorities. Ahead of his visit to Toronto, he welcomed the €480,000 allocated to Canadian organisations, which will fund initiatives from Newfoundland to Vancouver, including senior services, cultural events, and newcomer support.

The announcement forms part of Ireland’s broader effort to engage its global diaspora and ensure sustained partnerships with Irish communities across North America.
