AMSTERDAM — Schiphol Airport has launched a groundbreaking pilot program deploying hydrogen-powered ground support vehicles, marking a global first in sustainable aviation logistics. The initiative is part of the airport’s broader strategy to achieve zero-emission ground operations by 2030.
The pilot includes hydrogen-fueled baggage tractors and towing vehicles operating on-site, replacing traditional diesel-powered units. Developed in collaboration with Dutch energy and mobility partners, the program aims to test operational efficiency, refueling logistics, and emissions reduction in a high-traffic airport environment.
Royal Schiphol Group CEO Ruud Sondag emphasized the significance of the trial: “Hydrogen offers a promising pathway to decarbonize airport operations without compromising performance.”
The project aligns with the Netherlands’ national climate goals and supports the European Union’s Green Deal ambitions. If successful, it could serve as a blueprint for hydrogen adoption at major airports worldwide.
