ENUGU, Nigeria — A violent assault on the residence of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Frank Mbah in Ezimo Community, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State has left one police officer dead. The attack occurred on Thursday evening around 7 p.m., when suspected armed assailants attempted to breach the premises.

According to local sources, the gunmen—believed to be part of a kidnapping syndicate—encountered resistance from the officer guarding the property. The attackers fatally shot the officer, seized his rifle, and fled into nearby bushland.

Community members have linked the incident to a recent surge in kidnappings in the area, with suspicions pointing toward Fulani herdsmen. The same group is believed to be responsible for the killing of a Catholic priest, Rev. Fr. Mathew Eya, in the neighboring Eha-Ndiagu community the following day.

Residents expressed shock and concern over the deteriorating security situation. “Nobody from Ezimo would nurse evil against Frank Mbah. He is our pride,” one local stated.

Efforts to reach the Enugu State Police Command for comment were unsuccessful. The incident has intensified calls for improved security measures across the region.
