The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh are currently on a formal visit to Japan, the visit shows the enduring ties between the two countries and the British and Japanese royal families.

Their Royal Highnesses were received at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo by Their Majesties The Emperor and Empress of Japan. The visit also included a meeting with Crown Prince and Crown Princess Akishino, reflecting the strong diplomatic and cultural rapport between the two nations.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh official visit to Japan is from 18 to 22 September 2025, spanning five days and will further strengthen trade and diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In a symbolic gesture of continuity and friendship, the Duke and Duchess planted an oak sapling in the garden of the Akasaka Residence. The tree was cultivated from an oak originally planted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II during her state visit in 1975.

As part of their cultural engagement, the royal couple attended a sumo wrestling tournament at the Ryogoku Kokugikan National Sumo Arena, experiencing one of Japan’s most iconic traditions.

The visit highlights the shared respect and historical connection between the United Kingdom and Japan, with a focus on heritage, diplomacy, and cultural exchange.
