The U.S. House of Representatives on Friday passed a bipartisan resolution honoring conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University on September 10. The resolution, introduced by Speaker Mike Johnson, recognizes Kirk’s contributions to political discourse and condemns the act of political violence that led to his death.
Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, was addressing students when he was assassinated. The suspect, Tyler Robinson, has been charged with aggravated murder and multiple related offenses.
The resolution passed with a 310–58 vote, with more than 90 Democrats joining Republicans in support. However, some lawmakers expressed concern over language in the measure that praised Kirk’s character and legacy. An alternative resolution condemning political violence more broadly was introduced by Rep. Marc Veasey (D-TX).
The House resolution also commends law enforcement for their efforts in apprehending the suspect and calls on Americans to reject political violence and recommit to respectful debate. Kirk’s memorial service is scheduled for Sunday in Arizona, with several high-profile figures expected to attend.
