Mario Guevara, a Spanish-language journalist originally from El Salvador, remains in U.S. custody and faces imminent deportation despite all criminal charges against him being dismissed. Guevara was arrested on June 14, 2025, while livestreaming a protest against immigration raids in Georgia. He was charged with unlawful assembly, obstruction, and pedestrian violations, but those charges were dropped on July 10.

Instead of being released, Guevara was transferred to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which claims he is in the country illegally—a claim disputed by his legal team. Guevara has lived in the United States since 2004, applied for asylum in 2005, and was legally authorized to work at the time of his arrest. He also has a path to permanent residency through his U.S. citizen son.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and other press freedom advocates have condemned his continued detention, calling it a dangerous precedent for international journalists working in the U.S. Guevara’s reporting on immigration and law enforcement, including coverage of ICE operations, is believed to have contributed to his targeting.

Guevara founded MG News in 2024 and previously worked for Mundo Hispanico. His case has drawn widespread concern over press freedom and the treatment of journalists covering sensitive issues.
