The Duchess of Edinburgh has concluded her four-day official visit to Canada, which ran from Thursday, September 4 to Monday, September 8, 2025. Undertaken on behalf of King Charles III, the tour included engagements in Alberta and marked a significant moment in her royal duties.

During the visit, Duchess Sophie was formally honoured with the South Alberta Light Horse (SALH) Regimental Medal (No. 0010) at the Jefferson Armoury in Edmonton. The award recognized her longstanding support as Colonel-in-Chief of the regiment, a ceremonial role she has held since 2005.

She also presented King’s Coronation Medals to four distinguished individuals: Lieutenant (Ret.) Richard Mack, Master Corporal Liam Lidar, Warrant Officer Daniel Tarrant, and Mrs Susan Angus. The event concluded with a regimental family photograph, symbolizing the warmth and appreciation surrounding her visit.

Sophie’s tour followed her recent appointment as patron of Spruce Meadows, a leading show jumping venue. She arrived in Alberta shortly after the announcement in April.

The Duchess is expected to have returned to the UK on Tuesday, September 9, as Buckingham Palace prepares funeral arrangements for the Duchess of Kent, whose passing was announced during Sophie’s time in Canada. In accordance with royal mourning protocol, she wore dark attire throughout the visit.
