Syria has officially exported 600,000 barrels of heavy crude oil from the port of Tartus, marking its first known oil shipment in 14 years. The deal, confirmed by the Syrian Ministry of Energy, was made with B Serve Energy, a firm linked to global trader BB Energy.

The oil was transported aboard the Nissos Christiana tanker and sourced from multiple fields across Syria. This milestone follows years of conflict that severely disrupted the country’s oil infrastructure and halted international trade. Syria previously exported 380,000 barrels per day in 2010, before civil unrest escalated into a prolonged war.

The shipment comes amid broader efforts by Syria’s post-conflict government to revive its economy and re-engage with global markets. Recent developments include the lifting of U.S. sanctions and an $800 million agreement with DP World to develop a multi-purpose terminal at Tartus.

While challenges remain—including strained relations with Kurdish-led authorities controlling key oil fields—the export is seen by some observers as a step toward economic recovery and regional stability.
