A strong and shallow earthquake measuring magnitude 6.0 struck Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region late Sunday, August 31, 2025, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake occurred at 11:47 p.m. local time, with the epicenter located approximately 42 kilometers east-northeast of Jalalabad, near the border with Pakistan. It struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles), making it relatively shallow and potentially more damaging.

Initial reports indicated minor injuries, with at least 15 people treated at local hospitals in Nangarhar Province and 9 dead people, a more recent update puts the death toll at over 250. A second tremor, measuring magnitude 4.5, followed roughly 20 minutes later in the same area.

Afghanistan lies near the junction of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates and is prone to seismic activity. While no major damage has been reported, authorities continue to assess the impact.
