Irish humanitarian Gena Heraty has been released along with seven others, including a child, following their abduction on August 3, 2025, from the St. Hélène orphanage in Kenscoff, Haiti. Heraty, a Mayo native, has spent over three decades working with vulnerable children in the country.
In a statement issued by her family, they expressed being “relieved beyond words” and extended deep gratitude to all who contributed to securing the group’s safe return. They acknowledged the support of Tánaiste Simon Harris, Ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason, and the Department of Foreign Affairs, as well as the global community for its solidarity and concern.
Tánaiste Harris, speaking from Copenhagen, described Heraty as “an incredible humanitarian worker” and praised her resilience and lifelong dedication to Haiti’s most vulnerable. He also recognized the efforts of local Haitian authorities, international partners, and Heraty’s colleagues at Nos Petits Frères et Sœurs.
The family emphasized that their immediate priority is Heraty’s health, protection, and privacy, and requested media respect as all those affected recover from the traumatic ordeal. They also reiterated their hope for peace and safety for the people of Haiti amid ongoing instability.
