In the face of Russia’s unjustified war of aggression, Ukraine’s resistance and resilience continues to be a shining example to us all. On 24 August, we celebrated Ukraine’s Independence Day, honouring this steadfast spirit in defending freedom and democracy. The European Commission unfurled the Ukraine flag in front of the Berlaymont building in Brussels, which was also illuminated in Ukrainian colours, in solidarity.
As we mark this important occasion, Europe continues to stand with Ukraine, every step of the way. The EU has provided, and will continue to provide, Ukraine with unwavering political, financial, humanitarian, military and diplomatic assistance, for as long as it takes. So far, this support amounts to €168.9 billion. This includes a further €4.05 billion disbursement that was delivered to the country ahead of its Independence Day.
It also includes up to €50 billion under the Ukraine Facility. This dedicated instrument is supporting Ukraine’s recovery, reconstruction and path towards EU accession. €59.6 billion have also been mobilised in military support for Ukraine, which is helping to deliver military equipment and train Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Europe continues to be there for ordinary Ukrainians, allocating over €1.1 billion for humanitarian aid programmes in Ukraine . Moreover, since the beginning of the war, EU countries have welcomed over four million people from Ukraine under the EU’s temporary protection scheme.
Standing with Ukraine also means holding Russia accountable. Just in the last year, the EU has adopted four more packages of sanctions against Russia. And on 9 May, Europe Day, an International Coalition of States adopted the Lviv Statement formalising their support for creating a Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine, within the Council of Europe.
Of course, the goal is a comprehensive, just and sustainable peace for Ukraine. This requires a diplomatic solution. One that protects both Ukraine’s and Europe’s vital security interests. And one which enables Ukraine to effectively defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. In other words, one, which allows Ukraine to be truly independent.
