KURIL ISLANDS — A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck east of the Kuril Islands on 25 August 2025 at 06:48 UTC, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers and was centered approximately 313 km southeast of Severo-Kurilsk and 410 km south of Vilyuchinsk, Kamchatka.

No tsunami warning was issued, and the USGS assigned a Green alert for both economic losses and fatalities, indicating a low likelihood of significant impact. While the region is sparsely populated, it is known for its seismic activity due to the subduction of the Pacific Plate beneath the Okhotsk microplate.

The event follows a powerful M8.8 earthquake in nearby Kamchatka in July, which triggered a Pacific-wide tsunami and heightened awareness of tectonic risks in the region.

Authorities have not reported any casualties or damage, and monitoring continues for potential aftershocks.
