Melbourne Airport is set to begin early construction works on its third runway, marking a key milestone in a $3 billion (A$) infrastructure expansion aimed at boosting capacity and reducing flight delays. The 3,000-metre runway will run parallel to the existing north-south runway, positioned 1.3 kilometres to the west, and is scheduled to open in 2031.

A 12-month preliminary works program will start this month, including upgrades to nearby roads to improve traffic flow and safety ahead of full-scale runway construction next year. Community consultations are underway to address aircraft noise concerns, with proposed mitigation measures such as roof insulation, double-glazed windows, and improved seals for affected schools and public buildings.

Peter Lellyett, Executive Director of the third runway project, described the development as vital for meeting future travel demand and supporting Victoria’s economy. The new parallel runway system will enable simultaneous take-offs and landings, enhancing operational efficiency for both existing carriers and new entrants.

Melbourne Airport, Australia’s second busiest after Sydney, is also advancing a $4 billion international terminal expansion and a $500 million upgrade to its baggage system. The airport is operated by Australia Pacific Airports Corporation (APAC), whose shareholders include Dexus, IFM Investors, Future Fund, SAS Trustee Corporation, and Utilities of Australia.
