The Office of Public Works (OPW) has announced a new pilot initiative offering free admission to all visitors under 18 at OPW-managed heritage sites throughout August 2025. The scheme, unveiled by Minister of State Kevin “Boxer” Moran, aims to promote youth engagement with Ireland’s rich cultural heritage by removing financial barriers during the summer holidays.
“We are fortunate to have incredible castles, monuments, and historic properties across the country,” said Moran. “This initiative gives young people the chance to explore their heritage, meet friends, and enjoy a day out in a meaningful setting.”
Key Details:
- Duration: August 1–31, 2025
- Eligibility: All individuals under 18, accompanied by an adult
- Scope: Applies to all fee-paying OPW sites, excluding Kilmainham Gaol and Brú na Bóinne
- Purpose: Enhance accessibility, foster historical awareness, and support family-friendly tourism
Featured Sites:
Visitors can explore a wide range of attractions, including:
- Roscrea Castle and Damer House, Co. Tipperary
- The Blasket Centre, Co. Kerry
- Ormond Castle, Co. Tipperary
- Céide Fields, Co. Mayo
- Dublin Castle and Custom House Visitor Centre, Dublin
The OPW encourages families to plan their visits using tailored itineraries available on Heritage Ireland’s website, which also outlines full terms and conditions of the scheme.
This initiative builds on the existing Free U12 scheme, now extended to include all under-18s for the month of August. It reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive cultural access and educational enrichment for young people nationwide.
