📍 Dublin, July 12, 2025 — Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Simon Harris TD has issued a renewed appeal to Irish citizens travelling abroad this summer to “Make the Right Memories” by staying safe, informed, and connected. The call comes amid a sharp 11% rise in consular assistance cases and escalating extreme weather conditions across Europe.

🛂 Consular Demand on the Rise The Department of Foreign Affairs has reported a notable increase in Irish citizens requiring support overseas during the first half of 2025, compared to the same period last year. The surge coincides with widespread heatwaves and wildfires affecting travel plans and posing health risks, particularly in southern and eastern Europe.

🗣️ Tánaiste’s Message Speaking on Saturday, Minister Harris highlighted the importance of preparation and awareness:

“While most trips go smoothly, it’s clear that many people are encountering difficulties that may be avoided with better preparation. Our Embassies and Consulates offer 24-hour assistance, but prevention is key.”

He specifically addressed young people travelling independently for the first time and older adults, urging them to take simple but essential precautions.

🧭 Recommended Safety Measures Travellers are advised to:

  • Obtain comprehensive travel insurance and a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
  • Research local laws, customs, and health alerts
  • Keep phones charged and share live locations with trusted contacts
  • Photograph key documents and monitor drinks in public venues
  • Swim only in designated safe areas
  • Limit physical activity during peak heat and moderate alcohol intake

🌡️ Health Advisory The National Health Protection Service of Ireland recommends:

  • Staying hydrated and avoiding excessive alcohol or caffeine
  • Avoiding outdoor activity during the hottest hours
  • Taking breaks in shaded or cool indoor areas
  • Wearing light-coloured, breathable clothing
  • Keeping rooms cool and ventilated during mornings and evenings

📍 TravelWise Resource Minister Harris encouraged all travellers to consult the government’s TravelWise platform for up-to-date consular and safety guidance, and to note the contact details of the nearest Irish Embassy or Consulate.
