On 2 July 2025, Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Simon Harris TD met with HE Sheikh Mohammed Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, during his official visit to Ireland. The meeting coincided with Prime Minister Al Thani’s acceptance of the 2024 Tipperary International Peace Award, recognising his pivotal role in mediating a ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.
🌍 Middle East Diplomacy and Regional Stability
The leaders held a comprehensive discussion on the conflict in Gaza and the West Bank, the Iranian crisis, and broader regional dynamics. Both expressed concern over ongoing hostilities and voiced support for renewed efforts to secure a ceasefire and hostage release agreement in Gaza. They also welcomed the U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Iran, stressing the importance of maintaining diplomatic momentum.
🤝 Qatar’s Role as Mediator
Prime Minister Al Thani elaborated on Qatar’s continued efforts as a neutral mediator in regional conflicts. Tánaiste Harris commended Qatar’s contributions to peacebuilding and humanitarian diplomacy, particularly in facilitating dialogue and aid delivery in Gaza.
