Washington, D.C., July, 2025 — The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have announced that the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in downtown Washington, D.C., has been selected as the new site for the FBI’s headquarters.

The decision marks the culmination of nearly two decades of efforts to identify a suitable location to meet the Bureau’s evolving operational and workforce needs. Earlier proposals to construct a new suburban campus were ultimately deemed too costly and time-intensive.

By opting for an existing federal property, the agencies aim to significantly reduce costs while supporting the federal government’s broader strategy to optimize its real estate portfolio. The Ronald Reagan Building is a modern, federally owned facility that meets the Bureau’s mission requirements without the need for major new construction.

“The FBI’s current headquarters at the Hoover Building is plagued by decades of deferred maintenance—from failing infrastructure to structural deterioration,” said GSA Acting Administrator Stephen Ehikian. “This relocation ensures the FBI workforce is supported in a safe, modern environment.”

“This is a historic moment for the FBI,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. “Relocating to the Ronald Reagan Building is the most cost-effective and mission-aligned solution, and it allows us to better protect the American people and uphold the Constitution.”

According to the GSA, the move is expected to save taxpayers billions in avoided construction costs and eliminate over $300 million in deferred maintenance obligations at the aging J. Edgar Hoover Building.

“This transition not only provides a world-class workspace for the FBI’s public servants but also delivers long-term savings to American taxpayers,” said GSA Public Buildings Service Commissioner Michael Peters.

The Reagan Building currently houses several federal agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). GSA stated that it will coordinate closely with CBP and other tenants to ensure their operational needs are maintained during and after the FBI’s transition.

A detailed transition timeline has not yet been released.
